Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
